ELIZABETH ND

Elizabeth ND is known for being the first typeface designed by a woman: Elizabeth Friedlander. It was engraved in 1938 by the Bauersche Gießerei. It has two styles: roman and italic. Its grace, delicacy and beauty allow many compositional possibilities, making it an ideal choice for use as a display and headline typeface.

ABOUT

Georg Hartmann writes that the Elizabeth typeface is one of the finest and most beautiful types ever produced. It is particularly appreciated by private presses and for prints requiring a delicate touch. Penrose Annual (1936, Volume 41) notes that Elizabeth is the most successful type of that year. Elizabeth is of impeccable taste. In 2005, the Spanish designer and typographer Andreu Balius was commissioned by Bauertypes, the successor of Bauersche Giesserei, to digitize the type, preserving its grace, delicacy and beautiful craftsmanship.

Elizabeth Friedlander (1903-1984) was born in Berlin. She was an Anglo-German Jewish typographer, calligrapher and designer. She studied design, calligraphy and typography with E.R.Weiss at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and worked as a graphic designer for the elegant magazine, ‘Die Dame’ being in charge of title and layout designs. She was commissioned to design a typeface for the Bauersche Giesserei in Frankfurt am Main, a very unusual assignment for a woman in those days. Her Elizabeth typeface was engraved at the Bauersche Giesserei in 1938. Due to the war, in 1939 she moved to London, finally taking British citizenship. After the war, she was successful as a book designer and graphic designer, among others for Penguin Books, Linotype and Monotype.
