OUR HISTORY
“AN ENTIRE LIFE DEVOTED TO TYPOGRAPHY”
Bauer Types, SL is the successor of two well-known type foundries of the twentieth century: Bauersche Giesserei in Frankfurt / Main – Germany (1837 – 1972) and Fundición Tipográfica Neufville, SA in Barcelona-Spain (1885-1995). Both companies made history in type casting over more than 170 years.

GEORG HARTMANN
Was the owner of Bauersche Giesserei in Germany and Neufville in Spain. Under his leadership, internationally renowned artists contributed with their creations to the success of typefaces which still enjoy great popularity in the new digital era: Futura, Bauer Bodoni, Weiss…
GEORG HARTMANN (1870 – 1954)
In 1898 Georg Hartmann (1870-1954) bought Bauersche Giesserei in Frankfurt / Main – Germany (1837 – 1972) and Fundición Tipográfica Neufville, SA in Barcelona-Spain (1885-1995). Under his leadership, internationally renowned artists contributed with their creations to the success of typefaces which still enjoy great popularity in the new digital era. These artists are, among others, E.R.Weiss, Ernst Schneidler, Lucian Bernhard, Elizabeth Friedlaender, Heinrich Jost, Imre Reiner, Oldrit Menhart and Paul Renner, the latter author of Futura.
In 1927 Georg Hartmann decided to open a branch office in New York, the Bauer Type Foundry, later converted into Bauer Alphabets. For over five decades they introduced as prestigious typefaces as Bauer Bodoni, Weiss, Venus, Beton, Futura and many others into the US Market. Two American designers, Howard A. Trafton and William Gillies also created types of Bauer.

CARLOS HARTMANN
Took over the ownership of Fundición Tipográfica Neufville SA in 1922. This company not only was the leading type foundry in Spain, but also supplied machines for the Printing Industry, such as Heidelberg, Roland, Koenig & Bauer, Krause, Hoh & Hahne, Goebel…
CARLOS HARTMANN (1899-1950)
After Georg Hartmann died in 1954, Dr Konrad Bauer and Walter Baum designed Folio, Imprimatur and Volta (Fortune), just as Adrian Frutiger did in 1966 with Serifa.
Carlos Hartmann (1899-1950), son of Georg, took over the ownership of Fundición Tipográfica Neufville SA in 1922. This company not only was the leading type foundry in Spain, but also supplied machines for the Printing Industry, such as Heidelberg, Roland, Koenig & Bauer, Krause, Hoh & Hahne, Goebel, etc.

WOLFGANG HARTMANN
Took over the management of Fundición Tipográfica Neufville SA in 1936 which then became Bauer Types, the only type company in the world capable of moving from the Lead to the Digital era.
WOLFGANG HARTMANN
In 1963, Wolfgang Hartmann (1936), son of Carlos, took over the direction of the type department of Fundición Tipográfica Neufville SA, after having worked for 5 years in Bauersche Giesserei.
As new technologies evolved, Neufville was able to maintain the manufacturing of types by acquiring several European type foundries, as Fundición Tipográfica Nacional (1971), Bauersche Giesserei (1972), Fonderie Typographique Française (1974), Lettergieterij Amsterdam (1984), Ludwig & Mayer (1985) and finally Les Fonderies Réunies de Caractères du Liban (1988).
In 1974 a branch office was opened in France, Neufville France. This company supplied foundry types to France and to Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.
