DESCRIPTION

Futura Black is the most forceful and expressive interpretation of the Futura family. Designed in 1929, it proposes an alternative way of achieving maximum typographic weight through a stencil-like construction, where form becomes mass and rhythm. Conceived from the outset for display use, it combines radical geometry with a powerful graphic presence, making it ideal for headlines, posters, and logos where visual impact is essential.

Context

Released during the height of the European avant-garde, Futura Black quickly became a fashionable typeface of its time, valued for its experimental character and visual strength. Its aesthetic, more emotional and less neutral than other Futura weights, made it especially appealing for institutional, editorial, and advertising applications.
Today, it remains an excellent choice for expressive uses, where typography does more than convey information, it builds identity.

Biography

Designed by Paul Renner and published in 1929, Futura Black is part of the early development of the Futura family, first presented in 1927 by the Bauersche Giesserei in Frankfurt am Main.

Futura Black is the stencil version of the family and has been widely used in display contexts ever since. Its character set includes basic and extended Latin alphabets, accented characters, standard ligatures, numerals, currency symbols, and mathematical signs.
Notable uses include the City of Boston’s public safety departments, the “R” of the National Association of Realtors, the logo for No Time to Die, Pulp magazine, and the Dodge Rebellion ’67 campaign.

Bold, direct, and memorable, Futura Black continues to prove that geometry can also be expressive and radical.
